A Tribute to My Father, Zacchaeus Aderemi Omotayo
To speak of a great man is to speak of a life that echoes far beyond his years. To speak of my father, is to speak of a legacy built on unwavering faith, profound generosity, and a father's love that knew no bounds.
You were, and will always be, my definition of a great father. You were extremely generous and kind… a man who would go to the ends of the earth to provide for us, even if it cost you your own convenience. You made sure Daniel and I never wanted for anything, not just the necessities, but the joy of having the best toys, the bikes, the computers. You built a childhood for us that was so full, it was the envy of our friends. But more than the things you gave us, you gave us the gift of your presence and commitment.
You were a Pastor, and your faith was the core of your being. Some of my most formative memories are from our morning devotions. You never shunned my difficult questions, even when I challenged everything. You always listened intently, you always tried to answer, and you always met my debates with that patient smile and your steadfast belief that "the Holy Spirit will give you conviction." You taught me that faith isn't about having all the answers, but about having a heart open enough to ask the questions.
You were my protector. I have always carried the memory of you coming home from a trip and seeing me in tears after a conflict with my elder brother. You listened to me: the younger child, and you made it clear that in our home, everyone had a voice and deserved respect, regardless of age. In that moment, you made me feel seen and heard in a way I will never forget. You taught me about justice and fairness.
The most important thing you taught me was integrity. You were the most faithful and honest man I have ever known, and you showed me how that one quality can build a life of respect and honor. It's a lesson I carry with me every day. I see your qualities in myself and my siblings, especially the spirit of leadership you instilled in us.
But my fondest memories come from the privilege of being your primary caregiver before your passing. In that time, the strong, invulnerable man I had always looked up to let me in. We had deeper conversations that I will forever treasure. And I will always cherish the memory of you asking me to kneel so you could pray and bless me. That was a grace I never took for granted.
Dad, if I could tell you one more thing, it is this: I am so deeply honored that I was with you at your last moment. I wish you could have stayed longer to enjoy the fruits from the seeds you sowed, but O ye Olorun.
I will remember you as the selfless man you were: always giving, always faithful, and always working to lessen the burdens of others. Though your work feels unfinished, your legacy will not be. Your impact will ripple through generations and your love, my greatest blessing, I'll carry with me always.
Rest well, Pops.
